PERCEPTION

“And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.”

A young lady by the name of Josephine put up something on her social media handle –
“So my friend was denied a well-paying job this morning because she had a leg chain
on, what has a leg chain got to do with acquiring a job?” Well, if I were to answer her, I
would say it is all about perception. Among others, two things will create a perception of
you in other people’s minds. First, your name. Your name will affect people’s perception
of you. In our title-crazy society, it is possible to think that a long list of titles confers an
advantage. The truth remains that a dozen titles do not equate to a good name. In
reality, a good name does not require a title to be powerful. Most of the world’s
influencers are known simply by their first names. Secondly, appearance creates an
impression. It is common in our clime to say that the way you dress is the way you are
addressed. You cannot dress as a whore or put on party clothing for a job interview and
wonder why you are denied the job.

“We must be careful not to betray the Christ that we profess.”

In the past two days, we have hammered on choices and decisions. The lady in
question exercised her power of choice by appearing in a certain way, forgetting that
others also reserved the right to perceive her in a certain way. Since we cannot choose
how people will perceive us, we should always put our best foot forward at all times. We
must be careful not to betray the Christ that we profess. In our text, believers did not call
themselves Christians; the world around them perceived them as so. How right they
were!
