“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” I Corinthians 2:12 NKJV

Prospering with our spiritual gifts begins with the discovery of them. You cannot put to any reasonable use what you are yet to acknowledge in the first place. It would be a tragedy of great proportion to lead through life without maximizing one’s gift. So, how do we discover our gifts? Sometimes, it is only through serendipity that some people discover what they have carried all along. You may find yourself rising to the occasion when duty calls, only to discover that you have done things deftly. At other times, the discovery is at the instance of an observer who perceived some grace in us and could not hide their compliment. The angel saw great strength in Gideon when he saw nothing in himself. The comment of the visiting angel was what later roused that sleeping giant.

“Prospering with our spiritual gifts begins with the discovery of them. You cannot put to any reasonable use what you are yet to acknowledge in the first place.”

A more direct approach to discovering what gifts we have is to employ a basic rule of prayer. In Matthew 7:7, Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” If you are in doubt of what has been given you, ask the Giver. God knows what He gave you in the first place, and is in a better position to make them known to you. When you ask, pay attention to the workings of the Spirit in you. Our text says it is the Spirit of God that shows what has been given us. God’s Spirit will liaise with your recreated human spirit and bring illumination. It is for this reason that your spirit has to be at the highest level of sensitivity. Renewing your spirit by the word, meditation, and prayer sets the stage for divine communication of your heritage in God.
