One of the many songs by Mary McKee and the Genesis is GUESS WHO MOVED. Though it’s been decades since that song debuted, it is still instructive today. The first line of the song says, “If you used to walk with Jesus but you’re now away from GOD Guess who moved?” Further along, it says: “Guess who made the move in substituting/Alpha and Omega is intact/Guess who did the switch and so proving/That you can’t look at Jesus with your back”. The idea is that God is constant! If you no longer feel Him, you are the one who shifted ground. You can always find God where you left Him.
The second step needed to draw near to God is to get rid of a double mind. Coming to God requires that we believe in His existence and that He rewards those who seek Him diligently.
One of the ways we have of knowing that a gulf now exists between God and us is that we don’t get to hear His voice as clearly as before. God’s voice pales with distance. So James invites us back to the place of intimacy with God. If we take the initial steps to reach God, He will meet us the remainder of the way. James included two things that can bring us closer to God in this text. First, there has to be cleansing. We said earlier that God does not change, and this includes His moral attributes. He is still a holy God. He still detests sin though He loves sinners. If we must come to Him, we have to plunge ourselves beneath the Blood for cleansing. The second step needed to draw near to God is to get rid of a double mind. Coming to God requires that we believe in His existence and that He rewards those who seek Him diligently.
