If you find yourself as a tourist in a foreign land, your hope of making the most of the trip lies in getting a tour guide. Most tour guides are indigenes and they have mastered the terrain so well that they can take you through the shortest route to your destinations. As helpful as a tour guide might be, there is still a limitation. When night falls, he leaves you alone until another day. Even from a professional point of view, the guide from man is limited. Again, if you change location and move to another land, your former guide may prove useless as he may be a stranger as well. Guidance from God is different. God can guide through the dark hours and in every place. Remember that the whole earth is His, so He has jurisdiction everywhere.
When God guided Israel in the wilderness it was both day and night. By day He was their pillar of cloud; and by night, He was a pillar of fire. For Him, both day and night are the same. To enjoy God as the Great Guide, it is important to first admit that you need help. From cradle to the grave, we need guidance. The emphasis that we put on guidance is because of its importance to our quest for success and significance. Speed alone does not guarantee victory in life. Speed could be counter-productive if one is facing the wrong direction. Apart from this, it is equally important to know that God is committed to guiding us to the very end. The Passion Translation of our text says that God “will lead us onward until the end, through all time, beyond death, and into eternity”! You can’t beat that. What is left to be added is that following each direction He shows qualifies us to receive another.
