When my wife and I visited London in November of 2024, we stayed at Premier Inn in Lewisham. The choice of that place was informed by its proximity to where our daughter and her family lived. One evening as I tried to clarify something with the front desk of the hotel, I saw a quote on a stand – “A good book is a friend that never lets you down”. Beneath that was a request to donate books which, I believe, were to serve the public good. My mind which was already wired to put a spiritual spin on virtually everything wondered which book could match the Bible in goodness. Absolutely none! It is one book that will not let you down. It always has something to say for all situations.

Above that, ask for grace to go beyond reading the word of God to living by its precepts. 

God gave it to Joshua as his success formula. He was to read and meditate in it day and night and conduct his life by its views. Joshua followed these instructions and made a huge success of his leadership. Hundreds of years before Israel asked for a king, God foresaw that a day would come when they would go that route. Through Moses, He told them that any king upon assuming the throne should have a copy of the Book. That would be the constitution to govern the people. The Psalmist opened his writings by tying success to meditation on the word. If you are yet to make Bible reading a part of your daily routine, this year should be your starting point. If that is already part of your routine, ask God for the grace to be consistent. Above that, ask for grace to go beyond reading the word of God to living by its precepts.
