In Proverbs 3:6, Solomon gave a wise counsel – “In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” I recently read of someone who wrote that we should not over-plan because life has its plan for us. The wisdom of both writers is that we don’t have control over everything. The year 2020 will be unforgettable. Many started the year with dreams and aspirations, but got scuttled by Covid-19 global lockdown. It was a great disruptor for many. Plans were drastically altered, postponed or cancelled outright. Unfortunately, many people were outlived by their plans as they could not make it through the year. The year brought to light, among other things, the limits of human knowledge and plans. It taught us that life is full of uncertainties.
…planning and leaving God out of it is not only presumptuous, it is evil. Deference to God in all our ways is deterrence to pride and presumption.
This makes James’ counsel very important. In our text, he taught us to always make a caveat in our plans. Since we do not know what tomorrow has in store, our plans must always reference the will of God. The most grandiose plan cannot see the light of day unless God gives it a pass. According to James, planning and leaving God out of it is not only presumptuous, it is evil. Deference to God in all our ways is deterrence to pride and presumption.
