The book of Proverbs strongly emphasises the virtue of diligence. It is the route to having our needs met. Lack of it leads to insufficiency and beggarly existence. “The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing.” Proverbs 20:4 NKJV. On the contrary, hard work provides for our needs and paves the way to meeting people of influence. However, as good as working hard is, it does not capture all there is for man’s success. This is clearly stated in Ecclesiastes 9:11 – “I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.” (NLT).

The same sentiment is expressed in Isaiah 48:21 – “They were not thirsty when he led them through the desert. He divided the rock, and water gushed out for them to drink.” (NLT). When we secure God’s guidance, we ensure green pastures and still waters. Therefore, before working hard at a task, get direction from God.
