A total of four epistles – Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon – are sometimes called the prison epistles. This description is born out of the place where they were written. Paul wrote them from prison. Held by the Roman authorities, he found a way to express God’s word to his audience. When he wrote those letters, he never knew that they would be added to the canon of Scriptures. Thousands of years later, those words from the Apostle are still saving and blessing lives.
Whenever it seems that you are hard pressed, remind yourself that you are made of insuppressible seed.
This brings us to our text. Apostle Peter reminds us that we are born of incorruptible seed, which is the word of God. He noted that the word lives and abides forever. An additional attribute of God’s word can be found in 2 Timothy 2:9 – “wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.” It is the unstoppable nature of God’s word that allowed it to find expression, even while Paul was confined in prison. If believers truly understand what they are made of, they will walk tall anywhere and under any circumstances. John was on the Isle of Patmos, a place of banishment, but the word found him there. He received a vision of God’s plan for the end of the world and the dawn of eternity. Whenever it seems that you are hard pressed, remind yourself that you are made of insuppressible seed.
