On June 12, 2025, I came across the Facebook page of one Adeoye Ademola where he wrote: “I am a student of history. In the last 20+ years, virtually everyone who came to the faith, entertainment drew them. It will take entertainment to keep them!” While I may not know the percentage of those who are drawn to church through entertainment, I want to agree that there is an element of truth in his observation. To say the least, this has put the church in a precarious position, making her lose both power and influence.
It is one thing to be ignorant or foolish, but it is terrible to be arrogantly so…God’s house is a holy ground. Turning it to a place of lewdness and irreverent jokes in the name of entertainment is like devouring holy things. It is risky.
Writing to the Ephesians, Apostle Paul made a long list of those things that should not be found among those professing new life in Jesus. On the list is foolish talking or coarse jesting. WhatsApp we see and hear among believers these days make one wonder if they ever came across our text. I remember two cases that were reported to me recently. One was reported to have said that Judas said there would be no Easter in one particular year because he couldn’t accept 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus. In other words, the betrayer needed a raise! On another occasion, a man was asked to take an offering in church. He announced that for any believer to be poor means that their angel is lazy. So they were going to take an angel-sacking offering! It is one thing to be ignorant or foolish, but it is terrible to be arrogantly so. Proverbs 20:25 says, “It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, And after vows to make enquiry.” God’s house is a holy ground. Turning it to a place of lewdness and irreverent jokes in the name of entertainment is like devouring holy things. It is risky.
