A theme that runs through the Bible is that God rewards faithful service. However, it is not in any man’s power to determine how God would do it. A common mistake many believers make is to view God’s reward package as mere handouts. However, the reward can come in different packages, and sometimes in an indirect manner. Your work or vocation could be the avenue which God intended for your reward. In Luke chapter 5 Jesus used Peter’s boat for a make-shift podium to preach to the crowd. When He was done, He turned to reward the donor of the boat. He didn’t give him money directly but guided him on what to do. Take note that Jesus used his trade to reward him.
One word of instruction from Him could mean a compensation for many years of faithful service…God’s reward is not limited to money or material alone; it may come in the form of a calling into higher levels of divine service.
From the same story, we learn that a divine instruction could be the pathway to your reward. When God gives you an instruction or a direction, don’t waste time analysing it. Just obey! Peter was asked to launch into the same sea where he had laboured and caught nothing. Though it did not make sense, he obeyed. “And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.” Luke 5:6 NKJV. Instead of looking for a dole-out, maybe it is about time to desire divine direction. One word of instruction from Him could mean a compensation for many years of faithful service. One more powerful truth stands out in this story. God’s reward is not limited to money or material alone; it may come in the form of a calling into higher levels of divine service. While Peter was surprised at the great catch of fish, Jesus promoted him to a fisher of men.
