Caleb was one of several Bible characters who enjoyed divine endorsement. The reason for his endorsement was his report on the Promised Land. When 10 of the spies brought a negative and discouraging report of the land, Caleb and Joshua took a bold stand. It was a costly stand as the congregation sought to stone them. Ironically, the very thing that made the people want to stone them was what earned God’s approval. What is playing out in our text is God’s promise to reward anyone who is faithful to His cause. Both Caleb and Joshua survived the destruction in the wilderness and entered the fullness of Canaan’s blessing. There is a divine prize for holding on to the word of God.

Abraham was counted among those who received God’s approval. God esteemed him so highly that He called him His friend. Genesis 18:19 is a statement of endorsement – “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” Another outstanding Old Testament character was Job. The common denominator of all these people was that they stood for God when it mattered most. They did not mind the cost of obeying and pleasing God. In return, God gave them eternal blessings.
