In 1521, Pope Leo X granted the title “Defender of the Faith” to King Henry VIII of England for defending Catholic sacraments and the papacy. However, when King Henry broke with Rome and established the Church of England, the title took on a new meaning and became the monarch’s role as the supreme governor of the Church of England. That title belongs to King Charles III today, and he has expanded the use of it to protect diversity of faith and interfaith unity. In Philippians 1:17, Apostle Paul spoke of his readiness to defend the gospel. Peter on his part enjoined us to always be ready to supply an answer to those who ask for the reason behind our faith. In other words, he wants us to defend our faith in Christ.
Besides, God is looking for those who will take a stand to defend the faith of Christ which was delivered through the gospel… All believers should heed the clarion call and become defenders of the faith.
In every generation, God would normally seek out someone or group of persons to stand for the faith. He found the three Hebrew boys in Babylon when they refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s image of gold. Later Daniel defied the odds and prayed after it had been decreed that no one should call on any God for anything but to the king for 30 days. In the days of Ezekiel, God was looking for an intercessor. Well, in a sense He still looks for people who will pray in spirit and in truth. Besides, God is looking for those who will take a stand to defend the faith of Christ which was delivered through the gospel. The magnitude of false gospel being peddled calls for spirited action of a few who will lift up the standard for the world to see. All believers should heed the clarion call and become defenders of the faith.
