The writer of Hebrews offered an admonition for those whose goal is to see God. “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” Hebrews 12:14 NKJV. Two things are listed as part of the essential things to pursue – peace and holiness. Without mincing words, the writer tells us that if we don’t have these virtues we cannot see the Lord. The focus here is the former. In His teaching on the mount, Jesus stressed the place of peace. He taught that peace makers are those who truly merit to be called sons of God. Apostle Paul severally taught on the need for brethren to be of one mind. In other words, he wanted them to be at peace within and between themselves.
Peace will not come automatically; it comes when it is pursued…When you are looking for peace, you may sometime be required to let go of your right.
What we need to bear in mind at this point is that peace will not come at a bargain. Again, peace will not come automatically; it comes when it is pursued. Whether between couples or among departmental relationships, there is always a price to pay to achieve peace. In our text, we have an example of a typical price for peace. Abram worked to forestall the breakdown of peace between himself and lot and between their respective shepherds. He proposed a separation and asked Lot to choose any portion of land that pleased him. He gave up his right of first choice. When you are looking for peace, you may sometime be required to let go of your right.
