In the past couple of meditations, we have examined a number of reasons for productive engagement. We noticed that God who we claim to be our Father is a worker; and it is by working that we demonstrate His nature. We have also learned that work is a commandment which, if obeyed, helps us to meet our needs and the needs of other people. Also, we must not forget that it is through work that we maintain our dignity. Those who employ parasitic approach to life weigh little in the eyes of the world.
Those who work legitimately contribute to human and societal development.
There is another perspective about work. As I make this entry of the devotional I am surrounded by a number of things in my study. I have air conditioner unit aided by a standing fan to help me against inclement weather. I have water dispenser at one corner of the room. Of course I am working with the aid of a table and chair among other items. All of these items represent the productive genius of some people who I may never meet in person. However, they are contributing to my life and work in no small way. This brings us to a powerful lesson about work. Those who work legitimately contribute to human and societal development. The products that you buy and enjoy are people’s gifts and contributions to you; what you create or do that others patronize are your gifts and contributions to them. By working you become a blessing to multitudes of people.
