Two things are rolled into this verse as constituting the heritage of man; that is, glory and honour. When glory is used for man, it has to do with affluence. As important as wealth is, it is not in the same class as honour. In a demonstrable way, honour is superior to wealth. We know men of little means who are held in high esteem in the society. Honour comes from integrity, and from having a good name and a good report among the people. It is the product of conducting one’s affairs with utmost chastity. Honour comes as you become a person whose word is his bound. Above all, following the example of Christ is a verified way to honour.

God is conscious of the honour of His name. Hence, Israel was forbidden from profaning the name of the Lord or using it to buttress a lie. Every believer must be conscious of God’s name just as He is. This way we are able to fully enjoy the heritage of honour. Now, let us note that a man of means will be able to buy anything at any time; but a man of honour will obtain goodwill where money either is insufficient or incapable of handling situations. The good news is that believers don’t have to sacrifice one on the altar of the other. Walking in all the counsel of God can make you inherit both.
