Without mincing words, John declared that those who are born of God have overcome. What can we give as warrant for this strong assurance of our victory? Firstly, the fact that Jesus has overcome in all things is a big assurance. We know that He tasted suffering for the human race. Scripture tells us that He was tempted at all point as we are, yet without sin. He has been through it before. Having been broken Himself, He has become the Master at mending. And now a believer can say, “Because He lives, I shall live also”. On this note, He spoke the words of John 16:33 to His followers – “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Additional thought comes from the fact that whatever God allows on the way of the faithful will work together for their good.
Secondly, a believer takes his assurance of victory from the promise made by the Master. The gospel of Matthew ends with the promise of Jesus that, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age”. With Jesus in the boat of the believer he knows all is well. Additional thought comes from the fact that whatever God allows on the way of the faithful will work together for their good. Head or tail, the child of God wins! What is required is of us is to put our faith in both the finished work of Christ and His promise.
