The freedom of choice is here presented by God to His people. God made it plain that all choices will lead to one of two destinations – life or death, blessing or cursing. There is no middle ground. God went on to counsel them to make choices that will give them life and blessing and avoid choices with liability of cursing and death. How then can one tell the difference? In our previous meditation, we recommended that before any choice is made, one should reflect on the likely outcome. It is good to consider whether it will disconnect us from good people and wonderful privileges. Choices that fall into this category will definitely be choices of death. A good way to approach your choices is to find out from the lives of those who have made similar choices. If they became worse off, you have a red light and you need to tread with caution.
“Whatever choice is consistent with loving God and leading to keeping His commandments is a good one. “
There is a more sure way to determine the direction of your choices. What we have in our text was earlier cast in similar words. “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.” (Deuteronomy 30:15-16 NKJV). How did God set life and death before the people? By telling them how to transact life. They are to love God, keep His commandments, statutes, and judgments. Whatever choice is consistent with loving God and leading to keeping His commandments is a good one. Choices that will take you in opposite direction of the way of God is a snare to the soul.
