Footages of Iran-Israeli war were horrific. Apart from the loss of lives on both sides, the war has led to extensive economic damage. For instance, it is estimated that the campaign must have cost Israel about $1.45 billion dollars within the first 48 hours! Wider economic cost will be calculated by the houses and other infrastructure destroyed, businesses shut down, travel restrictions and others. The ruins of the past couple of weeks will take several years to recover. What does this suggest? The uncertainties of earthly investment. When there was global economic meltdown in 2007/08, the share price of many companies fell abysmally and many investors had harrowing experiences from which some are yet to fully recover. These examples bring something to the fore. The fortune of this world is highly volatile. It is up today and down tomorrow. An event that ought to be isolated in one corner can have sweeping effect globally.
The fortune of this world is highly volatile…Laying up treasures on earth is susceptible to many dangers…Investing in heaven frees us from distractions of this world. What we do for the kingdom’s sake are the only enduring investments.
This brings us to our text. Jesus called on His disciples to lay their treasures in heaven. Laying up treasures on earth is susceptible to many dangers. They may be destroyed by moth or preyed on by thieves. Alternatively, their values could drop. Wars may turn to rubbles what has taken years to build. On the other hand, treasures laid up in heaven are beyond the reach of destructive forces that are common to earth. This is where our treasures should be. Treasures stored up in heaven are not only secured, but they also help in re-directing our focus. A man’s heart will certainly be focused where he has his investment. Investing in heaven frees us from distractions of this world. What we do for the kingdom’s sake are the only enduring investments.
