In Bible days, kings were known for ostentatious displays of their majesty. After the first attempt, David successfully brought the Ark into Jerusalem. He was so elated that he not only danced with all his strength, but also provided for all his citizens in attendance. “Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.” (2 Samuel 6:19 NKJV). Imagine how many bakers would have been on duty to provide a loaf each to the multitude of Israel on that day! Also imagine how many cattle must have been slaughtered to give a piece of meat to the nation! That’s a royal bounty on display.
King Ahasuerus did something wilder when he hosted a feast for the officials of his 127 provinces for 180 days! He did that to show “the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty…” (Esther 1:4 NKJV). He commanded his stewards to give every official whatever they requested. As our text shows, he did all these to reflect his generosity. The good news is that God is more generous than any earthly king. Paul told the Philippians that God would supply their needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. God gives to us to display His generosity. This is why the Bible says that God can do for us abundantly above what we ask or think. It is all a part of feasting on His grace.
