The promise of greatness given to Abraham here became a trans-generational blessing. He repeated the same to Isaac and Jacob, and to those who descended from them. Through faith connection, believers of whatever race can also latch onto this. Our text is one of several passages in the Bible where God promised to make His people great. You have similar promise in the prophecy of Isaiah – “A little one shall become a thousand, And a small one a strong nation. I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time.” Isaiah 60:22 NKJV. No matter how small your lot is today, the potential of God for a greater height is already in you.
You have no business seeking greatness unless you want to use the influence that comes with it to better the lives of others.
Just before anyone is carried away with the promise of greatness, it is important to state that God does not do a thing without a purpose. So, why will He want anybody to be great? First, it is to reflect His greatness. When God’s greatness is radiated through a life, He is glorified. Second, God wants to fulfill the promise of greatness for the sake of His people and for the benefit of His Kingdom. David got it right because he saw his establishment as a means to helping the people of God. “David knew that the Lord had made him king of Israel and that he had made him a powerful ruler for the good of his people” (2 Samuel 5:12, CEV). Our lead Scripture shows us yet another reason why God would want to make anybody great: it is to be a point of contact to get other people blessed. You have no business seeking greatness unless you want to use the influence that comes with it to better the lives of others.
