The Bible encourages record keeping. In reality, the Bible itself is a record of dealings of God with man as well as man to man. Our text is about record. The inexhaustible resources of God were amply demonstrated in the way He fed Israel in the wilderness. For forty long years, He gave them manna. He even fed them with meat for a whole month at some point. As a testimony of His marvelous provision, God commanded the leaders of the people to keep samples of the manna they had been fed with. In today’s world, He would probably have asked them to freeze some or take a photograph of it.
record is a way to make the work of God become trans-generational. God did not want what He did to stop with the fathers but to be passed on to their children as well.
This type of record could serve several purposes. Firstly, it could be an occasion for thanksgiving. Gratitude begins with a remembrance of what God has done. The Psalmist charged himself in Psalm 103 not to forget what God has done for him. Record aids recall. If you are not thanking God sufficiently, you probably have a poor memory of His doings as He never leaves Himself without a witness in any life. Record can also stimulate faith. When we remember what was done in the past, we are more likely to believe Him to do similar things even now. Judging from our text, record is a way to make the work of God become trans-generational. God did not want what He did to stop with the fathers but to be passed on to their children as well.
