The high point of our text is diligence. It stresses that hard work can take us to prominent and honourable places. However, there is another angle to our text. To appreciate the point, imagine that the spider is working hard at singing. How much progress or impact do you suppose such effort will yield? Nothing, you would say. The reason being that the spider is not created nor gifted to make melodies. All it can do is to weave, and that is what takes it to the palaces. So it is the spider’s gift that is on display in effect. There is a quote that is often attributed to Robert A. Heinlein. It says, “Don’t try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.” In simple words, the pig is not made to sing.
Focusing your energy on areas outside of your gifting will amount to futile efforts…The starting point is to look inward and see what has been uniquely given to you.
Focusing your energy on areas outside of your gifting will amount to futile efforts. You have to recognize your limitations. Nothing can facilitate your journey to success and recognition like your gift. One text of scripture says the gift of a man makes room for him, and brings him before the mighty. Wishes don’t get people anywhere in life; it is their gift that constitutes their ladder to the top. Well, here too, we have to admit that we are applying this scripture in a secondary sense, but it stands in the light of reason and experience that what takes people up in life is their ability. The starting point is to look inward and see what has been uniquely given to you.

Lord, please help me focus my effort, and resources in the areas of my strength.
