It was a case of mistaken identity when the Jews asked John if he was the long-awaited Messiah. Without mincing words, John replied that he was neither the Messiah nor any of the other prophets that they had speculated him to be. Rather, he told them that he was a voice crying in the wilderness. His purpose was to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord. His answer was taken from Isaiah 40. In other words, he found his purpose in the book.
Both John and Jesus found their purpose in the good book – the scriptures…Purposes are not created, they are discovered. Giving attention to the word is a voyage of discovery.
In our text, Jesus went into the synagogue and read out the content of our text. That captured what He came into the world to accomplish. Both John and Jesus found their purpose in the good book – the scriptures. So we can safely say that the word of God is the storehouse of purpose. When you are trying to figure out your place in life and what you are called to do, the word of God is a friend that won’t let you down. Purposes are not created, they are discovered. Giving attention to the word is a voyage of discovery.
