I had two experiences in similar settings some years ago. The first was at Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Lagos, Nigeria. I had ordered a meal that was not delivered after a long time. In my frustration, I called their room service and realized I had given a wrong room number while placing the order. When the steward took the food to the room and there was no answer, she returned it to the kitchen. At another time, while lodging at a different hotel, I ordered breakfast. About forty minutes later, the food had not been brought. So I called again, and to my chagrin, I was told that no such order was received. Well, I left without any meal that morning.
It is an illusion to think that an order not registered in heaven will fetch us any tangible returns…Sin will block access to heaven, no matter how hard we pray.
These two experiences spurred my meditation on the subject of prayer. In some sense, prayer is ordering some things from heaven’s table. However, not all orders make their way to heaven. We are often concerned with how long we have prayed over a matter. It is not how long, but how well. We don’t check to know if the prayer was received in heaven. It is an illusion to think that an order not registered in heaven will fetch us any tangible returns. A long list of things can be responsible for our prayers not making it to heaven; one of which is sin. In our text, a man whose sight Jesus restored noted that God does not hear sinners. The only prayer of a sinner that will make sense in heaven is the prayer of repentance. Outside of this, it is a waste of time. Sin will block access to heaven, no matter how hard we pray.
