Having God as our principal partner will surely be a game changer. Jacob’s experience proved this. To begin with, he met his match in Laban, a man who excelled in trickery. Jacob swindled his brother once; but here he complained of his uncle having to change his wages ten times. But at this time something had started to change in Jacob. Though the full Israel had not emerged, the crooked nature in Jacob had started to give way when he met God at Bethel. He even went into a covenant with God. As carnal and lopsided as the terms of the covenant appeared, God honoured it. So when Laban started cheating on Jacob, he was really up in arms against God who had become Jacob’s principal partner. That’s why no matter what terms Laban drew up Jacob still prospered!
Salvation makes God our principal partner, and head or tail, we win. Not by our own power, but by the instrument of the covenant of God at work in our favour.
Believers should live conscious of the fact that coming to salvation through Christ brings them into covenant with God. Salvation makes God our principal partner, and head or tail, we win. Not by our own power, but by the instrument of the covenant of God at work in our favour. The good thing to note is that this covenant has passed the test of time. What Jacob enjoyed had earlier worked for Abraham and Isaac; and it was not going to give way over Jacob. By faith we have been inducted into this covenant. Our job is to walk in the terms of the covenant; and every opposition will come crumbling before us. Obedience is the key to activating this covenant.
