An experience helped me to appreciate the importance of enlarging our spiritual capacity. A benevolent brother sent a huge sum of money into my account to be distributed to two individuals in equal measure. That was the signal he got from the Spirit of the Lord. I transferred to the first beneficiary without any hitch, but not so lucky with the other candidate. On two or three different occasions the response I got was “transfer limit exceeded on beneficiary account”. Well, I am aware that a limit is usually set for sending. But for receiving, that sounded novel to me. I had to call the brother to crosscheck; and truly he actually set a limit on the amount of money that could be transferred to him!
God has no limit on what He can transfer to us. Mind you, we are not just talking in terms of cash here. We mean that to include all of the graces of heaven. James reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from God the Father. There is no constraint on God and His ability to bless us lavishly. However, like the story of the brother mentioned earlier, we are often the ones who set limits on what should be released into our lives. We may not do this deliberately or consciously, but we set the limit on ourselves nonetheless. One way of doing this is unbelief. Our lead scripture tells us what happened when Jesus got to His home country, where He had been raised up. The mighty miracles He did elsewhere could not be replicated there. By their unbelief, they literally set the limits on the amount of the power of God to be transferred into their lives. Unbelief is a lid. When we take it off, we increase our chances of enjoying more of the grace of God.
