We must have travelled for about 30 minutes on our Port Harcourt-bound trip from Uyo last December when some unusual noise sounded from the rear of the car. I called the attention of the cab man, a gentleman by every description, to the development. Initially, he concluded that it must be from the exhaust. I told him to drive slowly until we were sure what the issue was. Eventually he pulled up somewhere for a closer examination. It turned out that the bolts on the left rear tire were slack; and that was the reason for the distressing noise. The noise disappeared the moment he tightened them, but the lesson from the encounter just began.

‘’Things don’t just happen without giving previous signs’’, my driver said. ‘’People run into problems because they neglect the signs instead of attending to them’’, he added. Almost everything in our world has corresponding signs. “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.” (1 Corinthians 14:10 KJV). Human body is equipped with different types of signs. Taking note of them can prevent a complete breakdown in our health. The big one is that the end times also have signs. This was the challenge that Jesus raised with His enquirers. We make projections based on weather trends. We know when it will be hot or cold. We can tell when there will be thunderstorms. Jesus expects us to be able to read and understand the signs of the times. Everything is pointing to the fact that the sun will soon set on this earth as presently constituted. We do not have the exact date, just as Jesus said no one knows, but it behooves us, as the songwriter sang, to begin to count the years as months, months as weeks, and weeks as days.
