A central tenet of Orthodox Christianity is that of hypostatic union. It refers to the theological concept of describing Jesus as both God and man. Jesus was fully God and fully man! His divinity was established by several of the claims that He made of Himself. One of the shortest verses you have in the Bible touches on one of His claims. “The Father and I are one.”” John 10:30 NLT. The Jews knew the implication of this claim, that He was equating Himself with God. So, they attempted to stone Him. The miracles He performed pointed to His divinity. He walked on water without any floatation device. He healed the sick, raised the dead and cast out devils. These feats are not within the reach of ordinary men.
Jesus was fully God and fully man! …The miracles He performed pointed to His divinity…He was hungry…He died! All these point to His humanity…Jesus took on this dual nature to prepare salvation for you and me.
On the other hand, we see Jesus’ humanity in several ways. He was born of a woman like every other person. He was hungry and slept in the boat. He was even weary at some point. Yet the Bible says that God is neither weary nor faint. Above all, He died! All these point to His humanity. Today, we are marking His death. He came as God’s redemptive Lamb for the world. He had to take on the form of a man to accomplish this. The hypostatic union, which may seem confusing or even contradictory on the surface has been put in bright light by someone who said, “IF HE WAS NOT MAN HE COULD NOT DIE; IF HE WAS NOT GOD HE COULD NOT SAVE”. Jesus took on this dual nature to prepare salvation for you and me.
