Every year, January 15 is marked in Nigeria as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day. It is a time when those who have laid down their lives in the service of the nation are remembered for their services. Well, Mrs. Esther Adekanla was not a member of the Armed Forces but every Remembrance Day will start to bring up her name. She was a popular restaurant owner in Dutse, Jigawa State until she was brutally killed at her residence on January 15 this year. Known as Hadiza Nakowa, the businesswoman is now believed to have been killed by her son, Samuel Segun, aged 32. His reason was that he wanted to own all his mother’s properties.
Unless we are on guard, we can be easily overcome by the spirit of the last days. Contentment and patient waiting must be our watchwords.
Stories of this nature bring up the veracity of several scriptures. Proverbs 1:19 says that those who are greedy for gain takes away the life of the owner. Certainly, greed played a part in this dastardly act. Another scripture for consideration is Proverbs 28:20 – “A faithful man shall abound with blessings: But he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.” (KJV). The bane of many youngsters today is the undue rush to be rich. This story is a grim reminder that we truly live in the last days. Several pictures are painted of the days in which we live. People will become lovers of money with all its associated ills. The Bible also states that there will be loss of natural affection. Naturally, a bond exists between mother and her son, but that is being discountenanced these days for filthy lucre. Unless we are on guard, we can be easily overcome by the spirit of the last days. Contentment and patient waiting must be our watchwords.
