The second sin of Israel in this verse of scripture was the fact that they acted without receiving counsel from God. Another word for that would be presumption. There are cases of presumption in the Bible with telling consequences. One was the league that the children of Israel had with the Gibeonites. When the Gibeonites approached Israel, they presented a false identity. They presented stale bread as proof of their long-distance journey. They appeared so convincing that the elders of Israel signed an agreement with them. Joshua 9:14 summed up their error – “Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord.” Joshua 9:14 NKJV. More than 500 years later, the children of Israel suffered a dearth because they violated the terms of that agreement.
…never assume that we know the details about any issue or person…Nothing is too small to bring to the Lord’s attention…He is best suited to lead us.
The antidote to this is to never assume that we know the details about any issue or person. We should learn to follow the injunctions of the Bible. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV. Nothing is too small to bring to the Lord’s attention. He alone knows details about the present and future; therefore, He is best suited to lead us.
