Philippians 4:19 is a favourite verse in the Bible. It is an apostolic prayer and assurance for God to supply needs of a people according to His riches in glory. However, it is not to be taken in isolation. The prayer was said to the Philippians and anyone who wants to claim it must understand the context. Paul had earlier commended the Philippians as the only church in Asia who communicated with him concerning giving and receiving. They sent to meet his necessities time and again. He equated their generosity to a sweet-smelling offering to God, and it was on account of that he bestowed the blessing of Philippians 4:19.
Giving is a way of laying that eternal treasure. It is the equity that will be the basis of our reward when we stand before God on the last day.
Besides the benediction, Paul noted that what they gave to him and the gospel was a kind of spiritual equity that is lodged in their heavenly accounts. We all have accounts in heaven. In our previous meditation, we learned of the importance of not laying treasures on earth but in heaven. The treasures kept on earth may be corrupted or stolen. What we keep in heaven is secured eternally. Giving is a way of laying that eternal treasure. It is the equity that will be the basis of our reward when we stand before God on the last day. Before then, it is possible to draw from our equity; and this comes in form of favour, counsel, and supernatural ideas that can positively alter the cause of life. Whatever blessing we derive here on earth from our stewardship will pave into littleness when compared to what is reserved in heaven.
