Under Moses, God commanded that an entire tribe – Levi – be consecrated into the office of priests. They were to help carry out religious demands on behalf of the whole nation of Israel. Though the tribe of Levi was taken as priests, it had always been in the heart of God to make the whole nation a nation of priests. “And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” Exodus 19:6 NKJV
In addition, the prayers we offer amount to sacrifice before the throne. If we fail to worship Him and pray, we fail in a principal objective why we are made priests.
It was not until Jesus came before the universality of priesthood of an entire nation became practicable. This time around, we are talking of the holy nation – the Christendom. The dark ages buried this truth; but the protestant revolution brought back to light the universal priesthood of all saints. One important aspect of priests’ duties was to offer gifts and sacrifices to God. This has not changed; although the emblem of our gifts and sacrifices are no longer the same. Every priest, according to Scriptures, must have something to offer. Now we are to offer the sacrifice of praise to God, as He no longer accepts animal sacrifice. In addition, the prayers we offer amount to sacrifice before the throne. If we fail to worship Him and pray, we fail in a principal objective why we are made priests.
