Someone says that you cannot prevent the bird from flying over your head, but you can refuse it from nesting on you. Similarly, you cannot prevent temptation from coming to you, but you can do a couple of things not to fall into it. To begin with, those who would overcome temptation must understand its dynamics. Almost invariably, temptation strikes in the area of need. Consider the story of the man of God who was sent to deliver a prophetic message at Bethel. After delivering the message, he began his return journey through a different route as the Lord instructed him. Midway through his journey, he was found seated under an oak tree. That was where a man who introduced himself also as a prophet met him. He invited him for dinner which he initially turned down. However, being weary and hungry he went and ate. He yielded to the temptation which would prove fatal eventually.
When you are desperately in need, temptation may be lurking around the corner. A time of need is a time of caution and discernment…Watching by the word and incessant prayer are the surest safeguards against temptation.
In a similar light, It was only after Jesus had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights that the tempter asked Him to turn stones to bread. Satan brought that temptation because he knew Jesus was hungry. When you are desperately in need, temptation may be lurking around the corner. A time of need is a time of caution and discernment. Jesus fought off the hordes of temptation by the word of God. We have no other tool than this. Understandably, He taught the disciples to watch and pray. Watching by the word and incessant prayer are the surest safeguards against temptation.
