On August 4, 2025, I joined the team that welcomed Pastor Timothy Schmidt at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Nigeria. He is a notable leader of the Assemblies of God in Boston, Massachusetts. While we were driving to town, he told me that preaching ran in the family – his father and grandfather had both been ministers of the gospel. All his children are also involved in the ministry one way or another. Then he chipped in, “People talk a lot about generational curses without minding generational blessings.” I couldn’t agree more. In reality, more things are said of blessings than curses in God’s word. It is ignorance of the way to blessing that leaves many stuck in negativity.
If we live according to God’s ways, His blessing will rest on us – and when God blesses, no one can curse.
Our text highlights the blessed life of the one who refuses to walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the path of sinners, or sit with the scornful. Anyone who fulfills these conditions is righteous. So we can deduce that righteousness is one of the Bible codes for blessings. You can be sure that no business school will include righteousness in their curriculum as a factor for success. The book of Psalms also reveals other conditions for blessing – chief among them is placing one’s trust in the Lord. We can verify this from Psalms 34:8 and 40:4. Psalm 41 adds another condition. Those who consider the poor are on God’s list for blessing. If we live according to God’s ways, His blessing will rest on us – and when God blesses, no one can curse.
