Among several qualifications, Jesus is described as Shepherd. He describes Himself as the good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14). The author of the book of Hebrews describes Him as the great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20). Apostle Peter says He is the Chief Shepherd (1Peter 5:4). The focal scripture today captures two benefits if we recognize Him as our Shepherd. Firstly, there will be salvation. The Greek word for ‘salvation’ is not limited in meaning to deliverance from sin, but a range of benefits including healing or wholeness. Following Jesus is the way to wholeness.
“Following Jesus is the way to wholeness. those who follow the Shepherd will find pastures…The Shepherd knows what we need and where to get them.”
Secondly, those who follow the Shepherd will find pastures. I like what the prophet penned down here: “And they did not thirst When He led them through the deserts; He caused the waters to flow from the rock for them; He also split the rock, and the waters gushed out.” (Isaiah 48:21 NKJV). The people did not need anything as long as they were led by God. We don’t have to join the world in the rat race – activity without productivity. The Shepherd knows what we need and where to get them. If we take our bearings from Him, we will save time and conserve energy.
