A popular English proverb is “a stitch in time saves nine”. This truth played out in two opposing ways in the first chapter of the book of first kings. In our previous meditation, we learned how Adonijah positioned himself as heir to the throne of David. Perhaps he would not have been far gone in his goose chase had David reined in on him. In all probability, David knew about his posturing but did nothing. “(And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. His mother had borne him after Absalom.)” 1 Kings 1:6 NKJV. Adonijah took the king’s silence for consent and went on a path that eventually consumed him. A timely rebuke could have jacked him back to his senses but he received none.
” While we may not be able to predict with a high degree of exactitude, it is doubtless that leaving undone what needs to be done or postponing them to a future date could spell disaster one way or another. “
What David failed to do for Adonijah Bathsheba did for Solomon. A timely step taken by her was what eventually brought Solomon to the throne. Nathan prompted her to go and remind the king of his earlier promise to make Solomon the king. That step not only preserved the throne for Solomon but also probably saved their lives. While we may not be able to predict with a high degree of exactitude, it is doubtless that leaving undone what needs to be done or postponing them to a future date could spell disaster one way or another. Is there anything that you need to do now to prevent future complications? Go ahead and do it!
