Breakfast had been fully served when Jesus turned to Peter and asked, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” There could be several explanations why Jesus singled out Peter. It could have been for the fact that he denied Him despite his avowed commitment before He went to the Cross. Perhaps it was for the leadership role that Peter would assume after His ascension. Anyway, it is important to note that Peter replied affirmatively to every round of questioning; each of which was followed with the charge to feed the flock of Christ. After that, Peter turned to ask what would be John’s role, as we could see from our text.
God would rather have you focus on what He has commissioned you to do and not be a busybody in other people’s affairs.
Jesus’ reply to Peter’s inquiry is instructive. “Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remains till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.’” There are a number of lessons here. Firstly, God would rather tell you directly what to do than tell a third party. I know that God sends people with prophetic messages to others; but more often than not it would only come as confirmation to what He already told you. Secondly, God would rather have you focus on what He has commissioned you to do and not be a busybody in other people’s affairs. In our meditation yesterday, we made reference to the horses that are usually veiled to avoid distractions. Undue attention given to what others are doing can distract you from your God-given task.
