The militant nature of God can easily be attested to by some descriptions of Him in the Bible. For instance, there are about 235 instances where the King James Version of the Bible describes Him as the Lord of hosts. What is described in these places as Lord of hosts is translated as “the Lord of Heaven’s Armies” in the New Living Translation. So God’s got an army! After their miraculous escape from Pharaoh’s grip and crossing the Red Sea, Moses and all Israel sang excitedly in praise of God. Their doxology is recorded in Exodus 3. Precisely, Verse 3 says, “The Lord is a man of war; The Lord is His name.” (NKJV). The point of all these is that God is no stranger to battles.
Interestingly, it is not all the time that God fights that He resorts to weapons. There are times when He deploys other strategies. Our text shows how Saul and his men had encircled David. God used rumour to distract Saul and save David. Saul was told that the Philistines had invaded the land of Israel. In the face of a bigger enemy, he left pursuing David. David did not shoot a single arrow to enjoy this deliverance. Understandably, they named that place the Rock of Escape. Those who have this same God on their sides need not tremble in the face of any battle or worry about enemies. God will always provide an escape route for those who trust in Him.
