Today we come to the climax of our consideration of the giving culture of Abraham. God instructed him to take his son to the Mount of Moriah and sacrifice him there! This was like God bringing him to a valley of decision to know who has the precedence in his life – either God or his son, Isaac. This was a tough decision for an old man who waited so long to have that miracle child. Because Abraham had learned giving at the lower scale of things, he was able to scale this last hurdle as well. He obeyed and offered Isaac to God. By doing this, Abraham demonstrated that he loved God supremely, above his earthly joy.
What Abraham did was similar to what God would do for humanity eventually. Thousands of years after that unprecedented display of love, God sent His only Begotten Son into the world. He also would be offered as a sacrifice for the sins of the world and be raised again. We are approaching the season that commemorates the coming of Jesus. The challenge of the season is to learn to love God passionately as He first loved us. If God gave His dearest to us, we should be willing to lay down everything we are or own for Him. As the case of Abraham proved, we will soon find out that the way to unlimited blessing of the Lord is by laying our all on the altar.
