I often say that none of the good things that we enjoy should be taken for granted. We are never to commonise anything as “one of those things”. Every good thing is one of God’s things, and we must daily pay our due gratitude. Two events within a week led to this conclusion. Several years ago, I was traveling to Uyo, and was a little way before the Imo river bridge. In broad daylight, I saw a commuter vehicle in the opposite direction stopped at gunpoint and robbed. We miraculously escaped their assault. My heart beats for those hapless folks for the rest of the journey. A few days after that incident, we were returning home from the office at night when we heard heavy gunshots as we made the last stretch to our house. These and a lot of other violence in the city taught me that sleeping and waking up daily is not one of those things. Going out in the morning and returning peacefully in the evening is not one of those things; it is God’s thing! Psalm 4:8 says, “I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” (NLT)
However, sensitive and sensible people don’t wait to lose their health before they value it and thank God for it.
We need to understand that it is God who has given us everything freely for our enjoyment. Sleep at night is a gift; security day and night is a gift. So every day we need to sing about His goodness. We have taken many things in life for granted. Someone has said the things of life are hardly appreciated until they are taken from us. However, sensitive and sensible people don’t wait to lose their health before they value it and thank God for it. We live in a world of increasing danger. While we cannot pay for the security we enjoy, we should at least learn to daily appreciate God who neither sleeps nor slumbers for a good job.
