When Abram noticed that a crisis was brewing between his men and Lot’s men, he knew it was time for a proactive step. He realized that if things were not nipped in the bud there could be some rupture in their relationship as well. He took the initiative as the elder, and reasoned with Lot that there should be no quarrel between them because “we are brothers”. He made a proposal for amicable separation where each camp could expand without encumbering the other. Believers lay claim to God as their Father. That makes us brothers and sisters. In any outbreak of hostility between brothers there is actually no winner. Whatever happens, the Father is saddened because the world looks and laughs.
“Maturity is when one is willing to lose so that all may gain. You can be sure of one thing; those who lose anything to preserve the bond of unity among the saints will be handsomely rewarded by God.”
To preserve the bond of unity there are times we may have to forgo our rights and cherished positions for the greater good of all. Abram did not mind that as the senior of the two, the right of choice belonged to him. Again, he did not consider the investment that he had made in bringing up Lot after the death of his father. He conceded to Lot. Those who always seek their way before and beyond all else inadvertently advertise their immaturity. If you must take the lead and have the last say in all matters, then something is wrong. Maturity is when one is willing to lose so that all may gain. You can be sure of one thing; those who lose anything to preserve the bond of unity among the saints will be handsomely rewarded by God.
