“So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Luke‬ 13‬:16‬ NKJV

For every accusation that the adversary might bring against the elect, we can count on Jesus, our Advocate, to rise to our defense. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” I John‬ 2‬:1‬ NKJV‬‬. A woman was caught in adultery and people clamoured that she should be stoned to death. Jesus played the Advocate for her and she was freed. On another occasion, the authorities accused the disciples for violating the law concerning ceremonial washing of the hands. Jesus rose in their defense. Let it be known that if Jesus handles your case, you cannot lose!

There is not a single thread in that covenant that promised infirmity. As many as have embraced Jesus are now sons and daughters of Abraham. Freedom is their lot!

In our text, we see another instance of Jesus playing the role of an advocate. This time, a woman who had been bent over for 18 years was set free. The grouse of the ruler of the synagogue with that miracle was that it occurred on a Sabbath day. In her defence, Jesus appealed to an ancestral sentiment. Being a daughter of Abraham the woman ought to be loosed from her infirmity, Sabbath day or not. The question is, what is peculiar with being a son or daughter of Abraham that made infirmity an illegality? Abraham walked with God in every detail. God then cut a covenant with him and extended it to all his children after him. There is not a single thread in that covenant that promised infirmity. As many as have embraced Jesus are now sons and daughters of Abraham. Freedom is their lot!
