“Now Abigail went to Nabal, and there he was, holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk; therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until morning light.” I Samuel‬ ‭25‬:‭36‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
On Thursday June 20, 2024, I put on Facebook a cryptic quote of mine. Here is it: SOME ISSUES REQUIRE THE HOT BREAD APPROACH. WHEN HOT, DON’T SLICE THEM. Within hours, it had garnered hundreds of likes, reposts, and comments. Well, that wisdom was born a day before I put up the post. On the way to our estate, I stopped by a popular supermarket to pick up some items. At the confectionery section, I asked for sliced bread. The attendant told me that there were none because they were still hot. That was when my mind went into gear as I begin to process things. Attempt to slice hot bread will become a messy affair.
“Discretion will compel you to defer anger or comment on some issues so as to allow tempers to cool.”
In real life, there are things we don’t jump into when they are red hot. You will find this the more useful in relationships. Discretion will compel you to defer anger or comment on some issues so as to allow tempers to cool. Abigail was a good illustration of this. Her husband, Nabal, had verbally assaulted the men sent by David. In anger, David mobilized his men to go and avenge himself in the hand of Nabal. He was going to wipe out everything belonging to Nabal. When Abigail heard it, she intervened and assuaged David’s anger. Returning home, she found her husband in a drunken state. So she did not confront him – not until the following morning when then hangover was gone. Had she spoken to her husband when the issue was burning in her heart and the husband drunk, she probably would have risked her life.
