When Caleb said, “give me this mountain”, it is apparent that faith was on display. This contemporary of Joshua can teach us one or two things about faith. Firstly, faith does not weaken with age. As at the time that he made that statement, he was already 85 years old. It is not age that makes faith less potent, it is lack of continually supplying faith supplement. God’s word is both the source and sustainer of faith. As long as we keep to it, our faith can endure and keep on producing even at a hundred years

…faith does not weaken with age…faith is not arbitrary in nature…Faith is potent where there is a prior commitment from God…faith works best when you are in your domain…You can reign and rule as king as long as you respect boundaries.

The next thing we learn about faith is that it deals with specifics. In our text, Caleb was asking Joshua, the new leader of Israel, to “give me this mountain”. Caleb was not just asking for any mountain. He was pointing to a particular direction. Jesus would later teach on the same subject using the same expression, “this mountain”. The next lesson is that we must bear in mind that faith is not arbitrary in nature. When Caleb asked for the mountain, it was in the context of what God already promised. By demanding this, he was cashing in on what God said over four decades earlier. Faith is potent where there is a prior commitment from God. It is a misconception to see faith as a way of arm-twisting God. When you come to demand what God has already purposed, nothing shall be impossible. Finally, faith works best when you are in your domain. There are boundaries in God and in the kingdom. You can reign and rule as king as long as you respect boundaries.
