At some point in their journey, the children of Israel complained of the manna they were eating. They pressed for meat and Moses took their cause to God, who promised to supply enough meat for a whole month! Apparently, Moses’ mind could not handle the arithmetic. Moses reasoned that if all the cattle in the field plus the fishes in the sea were released for the exercise, that would still be a pittance. The text before us was God’s answer. It was meant to remind Moses of what the arm of the Lord had done in the past; and by so doing to enlarge his capacity to receive. Moses got the picture; and God brought meat for the people as He had promised. Our minds must constantly be renewed by the word of God; so we can continue to enjoy the unspeakable gifts and power of God.
The mind itself is a container, an elastic one for that matter. Where the mind is too constricted, it will not be able to receive the big things of God.
As a rule of thumb, the container must be in place before God will supply the content. Part of the reason for this is that any release before proper preparation may lead to wastage. Moreover, God will not release any more than we can handle. We can now appreciate the challenge of Isaiah to the children of Israel to get ready for what God was about to do for them. ““Enlarge the place of your tent, And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited.” Isaiah 54:2-3 NKJV. In most cases, the preparation required may be nothing other than renewal of the mind. The mind itself is a container, an elastic one for that matter. Where the mind is too constricted, it will not be able to receive the big things of God. That was the initial problem with Moses regarding the supply of meat. When he allowed God to renew his mind, all the children of Israel had more than enough supply of meat.
