The Apostles demonstrated the centrality of the word of God (and of course prayer) early in their ministry. When controversy arose over the distribution of relief materials in the Church, they took a stand. “So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.” Acts of the Apostles 6:2 NLT. Through the inspiration of the Spirit and consultation with the brethren, they agreed to choose seven men to oversee the food program. That strategic move led to further growth of the word of God and expansion of the Church.
preaching… is the manifestation of God’s word. Preaching is not the manifestation of a man’s oratory or humour…Effective preaching is giving out the word of God by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Although a typical worship service has different activities, preaching remains the heartbeat of it. Our text gives a classic definition of preaching. It is the manifestation of God’s word. Preaching is not the manifestation of a man’s oratory or humour. It is not the clever ability of man to hold people spellbound. It is not a sensational and rhythmic quotation of scriptures. Nothing was stunning about Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost. His sermon could hardly pass a homiletical examination. However, the impact of his words was undeniable. Effective preaching is giving out the word of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. Sound preaching is irreplaceable if we hope to see believers mature in faith.
