Psalm 32:8 is one of many commitments of God to guide and guard His people. The first part of the verse is the promise of guidance, the second half tells us the means – it is with His eye. If God is going to guide us with His eye, we had better fix our gaze on Him. We used the GPS recently to illustrate God’s guidance. If you must stay on course, you must be attentive to the voice prompt and glance at the route map on the monitor. Taking our eyes off God may mean taking a bend at the wrong time. In addition, the presumption must be jettisoned. Let me illustrate this with the story of the brother who picked me up from the airport. He has lived in that city for many years and has a fair knowledge of its road network. So on several occasions when the GPS gave us a directive to make a turn, we would head another way which he thought was better.
You can do that with a device and be fine, but you cannot presume on God’s as that has dire consequences. Reading our text from another translation will press this further. “I hear the Lord saying, “I will stay close to you, instructing and guiding you along the pathway for your life. I will advise you along the way and lead you forth with my eyes as your guide. So don’t make it difficult; don’t be stubborn when I take you where you’ve not been before. Don’t make me tug you and pull you along. Just come with me!”” (Psalms 32:8–9 TPT). Those who don’t listen to simple prompts from God may have to get ready to be tugged and pulled along.
