In yesterday’s meditation, we defined repentance as thinking differently. An area that needs urgent re-think is our theology. We need to do a re-think about God. This re-think embraces several areas. Firstly, the theology of seeing God as a genie must be dropped. By the way, a genie is defined as a magical spirit believed to take human form and serve the person who calls it. This is how many view God. They believe that God is at their beck and call. In their warped thinking, God exists to fulfil their every whim. For this group of people, it is not about the will of God being done on earth; rather it is the will of man being done by heaven. Such notion is alien to the Bible. God is the greatest of all. He made all things and they are to defer to Him. God is too big to be ordered around by mere mortals.
the theology of seeing God as a genie must be dropped…There is nowhere God asked us to develop our faith faculty at the expense of reason.
There is another faulty theology that must be fixed. It is the fact that some think that faith and reason are incompatible. They believe that if it is of reason it cannot be of faith and vice versa. Fewer things have put the children of God in dire situations than this. There was an element of reason in Abraham’s faith. “It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.” (Hebrews 11:17-19 NLT). There is nowhere God asked us to develop our faith faculty at the expense of reason.
