Here is the refrain of the timeless song, ONE DAY AT A TIME. One day at a time sweet Jesus/That’s all I’m asking of You/Just give me the strength/To do everyday what I have to do/Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus/And tomorrow may never be mine/Lord help me today, show me the way/One day at a time/ This song brings to mind several passages of the scripture that advocate the principle of one day at a time. The children of Israel were fed supernaturally throughout their 40-year sojourn in the wilderness. However, they did not have manna for one year supply stored anywhere. There was not even storage for a week’s supply. They went out every morning to gather what was needed for the day. When Jesus taught His iconic principles on prayer, He asked the disciples to petition the Father to “give us our daily bread”.
I do not think that Jesus meant that we should detest all saving culture or do away with planning. The idea is to decongest our lives by avoiding undue concerns about the future. Believers often find the burden of life quite tedious because they roll too many things together. We are worried about what would happen in five years’ time when we haven’t figured out what should happen presently. If we follow the rule of one day at a time, we will live a depressurized life and experience greater joy. Undue worries are a health hazard both to our physical and spiritual life.
