Perhaps, the closest religion to Christianity is Islam. The founder of Islam, Muhammad, said in Quran 46:9, “I am not something new among the messengers, and I do not know what will be done with me or with you.” On the other hand, Jesus knew and declared what would be for Him, those who follow Him, and those who detest Him at the end of time. An Arab proverb describes different groups of people and how to relate with them. It states that he that knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool – shun him. He that knows not and knows that he knows not, is simple – teach him. He that knows and knows not that he knows, is asleep – wake him. He that knows and knows that he knows; he is a wise man – follow him. The curious part of the proverb is that it says nothing about those who follow someone who openly professed that he did not know. Yet millions of people are following him today.
He that knows someone who knows and knows that he knows and refuse to follow him, is proud and arrogant.
Jesus left no one in doubt about His identity and position, and this set Him apart from any other religious leader. If you study His teaching, you will find that there was no ambiguity. He declared where He came from, what He came to do, and where He was going. In our text, He spoke expressly that He is the way, the truth and the life. From that Arab proverb, Jesus is the one to be followed. He is the light of the world; there is no occasion for stumbling for those who follow Him. For a final consideration today, we can put a spin on that proverb. He that knows someone who knows and knows that he knows and refuse to follow him, is proud and arrogant.
