So far, we have discussed two things that can impact your happiness positively – your walk with God and the stability of your family life. Next on the list is your circle of friends. Let me illustrate the worth of a true friend with a story. I have known Reverend Ayorinde Adeyemo for over 40 years. We first met at the Kwara State School of Basic Studies in 1979. We later found out that we are not just from the same local government area but our towns are a stone’s throw apart. He picked up a job with the Federal Polytechnic, Offa. He then built his house in my town. When he and his late wife got wind of a property going for sale in their neighborhood, they contacted me. It was through them that I bought my country house. On one occasion, we had some emergency at home. As soon as he was contacted, he boarded the next available vehicle to be with us. There are a few other friends who have been a part of my life and are a great help along life’s journey.
“Those who are surrounded by quality friends are happy indeed.”
Our text underscores the need to take care of friends. They become your go-to people when the need arises. The meaning of the text comes out more brilliantly from The Passion Translation: “So never give up on a friend or abandon a friend of your father— for in the day of your brokenness you won’t have to run to a relative for help. A friend nearby is better than a relative far away.” (Proverbs 27:10 TPT). A good friend can sometimes do far better for you than blood brothers or sisters. Your friends will give you counsel and freely rebuke you when you err. They are there to lift you when you fail. Those who are surrounded by quality friends are happy indeed.
